Grace (Struggling in a time of uncertainty)

Hello, to you all!

To begin the week, I wanted to share a message on showing yourself grace. You may have already gone into this week and all you had planned today has not happened or something fell through; you may be giving yourself a hard time at the moment. Take it from someone who is their own worst critic, literally I do not need anyone to criticise to me because I have already done it myself. I have been challenged and instructed by many people over the years to have understanding and compassion towards myself. To not take everything to heart and to find peace even when everything falls through. We always want someone to blame when something goes wrong and especially when it is our own fault, it can be devastating. Today I want to share some lessons/practises which I have been implementing and I hope they will help you.

I want to start with some scripture, which has been at the forefront of my mind while thinking on this blog.

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels or rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.  (Romans 8v37-39)

At this moment some of you may be feeling utterly defeated and allowing the situation to dictate your worth and purpose. For others of you, other people may be putting those expectations on you. It can make you feel worthless and a whole host of names you want to place on your identity.

This passage in Romans speaks about the immeasurable love of God, a love which cannot be defeated or overcome. It is a love which sees everything we are and do; yet God chooses to love us unconditionally. This love is freely available to us all, through all Jesus sacrificed for us. We were never created to believe we were worthless or stupid or insert name here. We were created intentionally, no matter what background or situation we may be from. God’s love for us is intentional and full of grace, we have been promised nothing will separate us from the love of God. We have been met with so much grace, but we never give it ourselves; some of us never give it to others.

A beautiful parable that illustrates the grace of God is ‘The Prodigal son’. Not going too deeply into it but I remember God revealing this beautiful truth, the story is found in Luke 15v11-32. I am skipping to the end when the son is returning after spending all his wealth and falling into a bad state. He is returning to his father’s house not as his son but in the hope of being a servant. Even while he is a long way off the father runs to meet him, the son is apologising about how unworthy he is. Yet his father did not allow him to take on his broken identity; he protected him, clothed him and renewed his identity.

And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate. (Luke 15v31-34)

May we know the grace of God within our lives, when we choose to come humbly and honestly before him. His grace is sufficient for every situation we face but we need to fully surrender and trust in him.

Reasons to show yourself grace:

  • Each day is different, and plans do not always work out. A goal not being completed does not make you a failure. Reassess the situation and try again.
  • We all get things wrong. Some people are more willing to admit it than others, but we all get it wrong sometimes. In every failure there is a lesson.
  • If you are more compassionate towards yourself it will make you more empathetic towards others. Therefore, you can support those with similar struggles.
  • To lift your spirits
  • Because you deserve it. You are more than what you achieve or do not achieve.
  • Some things may feel like the end of the road but in a week’s time they will not matter.

There are so many reasons to show yourself grace but I want to finish this blog, by making sure we address our thoughts and words. If we never show ourselves grace and our constantly speaking doom and gloom over our lives, it will become our life. I am not speaking about any law of attraction stuff or anything in that area. We do need to be speaking life and hope over our lives. There will be so many people who will try to tear us down and will attempt to make us feel worthless. We must have a barrier or knowing who we are and our worth. Honestly if you are discouraged, speak the promises of God over your life. I have verses stuck around my room, which remind me who I am even when I feel the worst. Lastly, surround yourself with people who speak hope and truth over their life and your life. As you continue in hope and truth you will be able to show yourself more and more grace.

Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body. (Proverbs 16v24)
